Steels continued hydrogen embrittlement

The cracking susceptibility of a micro-alloyed HSLA-100 steel was examined and compared to that of a HY-100 steel in the as-received condition and after heat treatment to simulate the thermal history of a single pass weld. Slow strain rate tensile tests were conducted on samples of these alloys with these thermal histories in an inert environment and in an aqueous solution during continuous cathodic charging at different potentials with respect to a reference electrode. Both alloys exhibited reduced ductilities at cathodic potentials indicating susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. The results of these experiments will be presented and discussed in relation to the observed microstructures and fractography. [Pg.169]

The process is nornoally used for simple, fairly small components. It is suitable for barrel plating or for continuous sheet and wire. No heating is used in this process except for hydrogen embrittlement relief on high strength steels. [Pg.388]

On a more positive note, it seems clear that steels can be made more resistant to the effects of hydrogen by incorporating as many strong, finely dispersed traps in the microstructure as is possible, while ensuring that there are no continuous trap sites (such as embrittled grain boundaries). [Pg.1241]

Pipelines represent the primary option for the most efficient transportation mode in a hydrogen energy environment. Pipeline is the most economical option for transportation however, the embrittlement of steels and diffusion losses represents a technical challenge.
