Steel sulfur additives

Industrial environments contain sulfur compounds, nitrogen compounds, and other acidic agents that can promote the corrosion of steels. In addition, industrial environments contain a heavier loading of airborne particles, which also contribute to corrosion. Urban environments are comparable with industrial, but the amount of pollution will be less intense. Marine environments are characterized by the presence of chloride, an ion that is particularly detrimental to the corrosion resistance of steels. Rural and indoor environments are the least corrosive of the atmospheric environments. [Pg.588]

Tellurium improves the machinability of copper and stainless steel, and its addition to lead decreases the corrosive action of sulfuric acid on lead and improves its strength and hardness. Tellurium is used as a basic ingredient in blasting caps, and is added to cast iron for chill control. Tellurium is used in ceramics. Bismuth telluride has been used in thermoelectric devices. [Pg.121]

Metallurgy. The strong affinity for oxygen and sulfur makes the rare-earth metals useflil in metallurgy (qv). Mischmetal acts as a trap for these Group 16 (VIA) elements, which are usually detrimental to the properties of steel (qv) or cast iron (qv). Resistance to high temperature oxidation and thermomechanical properties of several metals and alloys are thus significantly improved by the addition of small amounts of mischmetal or its siUcide (16,17). [Pg.547]

Residual Elements. In addition to carbon, manganese, phosphoms, sulfur, and silicon which are always present, carbon steels may contain small amounts of hydrogen, oxygen, or nitrogen, introduced during the steelmaking process nickel, copper, molybdenum, chromium, and tin, which may be present in the scrap and aluminum, titanium, vanadium, or zirconium, which may have been introduced during deoxidation. [Pg.396]

Manufacture. Aqueous sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium sulfite solution are treated with sulfur dioxide to produce sodium metabisulfite solution. In one operation, the mother Hquor from the previous batch is reinforced with additional sodium carbonate, which need not be totally in solution, and then is treated with sulfur dioxide (341,342). In some plants, the reaction is conducted in a series of two or more stainless steel vessels or columns in which the sulfur dioxide is passed countercurrent to the alkaH. The solution is cooled and the sodium metabisulfite is removed by centrifuging or filtration. Rapid drying, eg, in a stream-heated shelf dryer or a flash dryer, avoids excessive decomposition or oxidation to which moist sodium metabisulfite is susceptible. [Pg.149]
