The following experiments may he used to introduce the statistical analysis of data in the analytical chemistry laboratory. Each experiment is annotated with a brief description of the data collected and the type of statistical analysis used in evaluating the data. [Pg.97]

Various methods have been developed to eliminate biases which otherwise can skew results. The wines must be presented without identification, although the taster should be told the type of wines (the best strawberry wine should rate very poorly in a Cabernet class). Eor the most informative results, many details of coding, presentation order, repHcation, etc must be considered. The results must be statistically examined to estimate whether or not they could have been obtained accidentally. Statistical analysis is an entire field in and of itself, and wine studies have contributed greatly to its present sophistication, as appHed in the flavor field. [Pg.369]

Distribution of Carbon. Estimation of the amount of biomass carbon on the earth s surface is a problem in global statistical analysis. Although reasonable projections have been made using the best available data, maps, surveys, and a host of assumptions, the vaHdity of the results is impossible to support with hard data because of the nature of the problem. Nevertheless, such analyses must be performed to assess the feasibiHty of biomass energy systems and the gross types of biomass available for energy appHcations. [Pg.9]

Many different types of models are used as the foundation for statistical analysis. These models are also referred to as populations. [Pg.488]

The parameters Ci, t2 were postulated to be dependent only upon the substrate, and d, d2, upon the solvent. A large body of kinetic data, embodying many structural types and leaving groups, was subjected to a statistical analysis. In order to achieve a unique solution, these arbitrary conditions were imposed cj = 3.0 C2 for MeBr Cl = C2 = 1.0 for f-BuCl 3.0 Ci = C2 for PhsCF. Some remarkably successful correlations [calculated vs. experimental log (fc/fco)l were achieved, but the approach appeared to lack physical significance and was not much used. Many years later Peterson et al. - showed a correspondence between Eqs. (8-69) and (8-74) in particular, the very simple result di + d, = T was found. [Pg.434]

When data of a single type accumulate, new forms of statistical analysis become possible. In the following, conventional control and Cusum charts will be presented. In the authors opinion, newer developments in the form of tight (multiple) specifications and the proliferation of PCs have increased the value of control charts especially in the case of on-line in-process controlling, monitors depicting several stacked charts allow floor supervi-... [Pg.82]

Employ a model that mathematically describes a size distribution of this type, adjust the model parameters for best fit, and estimate the missing fraction above 564 /tm after correcting the observed frequencies, continue with a correct statistical analysis. [Pg.218]

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this set of studies is the question posed in the recent paper by Schmidt et al. (2004) and deals with the reality of the patterns they observed. Is the polymorphism observed a result of the calculation methods used in the study, neural network (NN), and multivariate statistical analysis (MVA) Would increased sampling result in a greater number of chemo-types It is entirely possible, of course, that the numbers obtained in this study are a true reflection of the biosynthetic capacities of the plants studied. The authors concluded—and this is a point made elsewhere in this review—that ... for a correct interpretation a good knowledge of the biosynthetic background of the components is needed. ... [Pg.49]

Insurance costs also depend on the safety precautions taken. When a homeowner buys fire insurance the cost depends on the type of construction and the nearness and effectiveness of fire protection equipment, as well as the value of house and its furnishings. To determine the effect of these factors a statistical analysis is made of the factors contributing to fire losses. Insurance companies are noted for not losing money, and so rates also depend on the past record of those insured. In determining automobile insurance rates the age and the number of previous accidents and traffic... [Pg.91]

Neural networks (NN) represent, as opposed to PLS and MLR, a nonlinear statistical analysis technique [43]. As is the case for both PLS and MLR, several aspects of NN should be considered when using this type of analysis technique ... [Pg.400]

For each scenario, the statistical analysis of this type of experimental design would be a two-way analysis of variance. This is predicated on the construction of the experiment, which includes some implicit assumptions. These assumptions are... [Pg.64]

Because of the large difference in the behavior of the thin plywood and the gypsum board, the type of interior finish was the dominant factor in the statistical analysis of the total heat release data (Table III). Linear regression of the data sets for 5, 10, and 15 min resulted in squares of the correlation coefficients R = 0.88 to 0.91 with the type of interior finish as the sole variable. For the plywood, the average total heat release was 172, 292, and 425 MJ at 5, 10, and 15 min, respectively. For the gypsum board, the average total heat release was 25, 27, and 29 MJ at 5, 10, and 15 min, respectively. [Pg.425]

Type A obtained from the statistical analysis of results from repeated measurements. [Pg.166]

Type B obtained by means other than statistical analysis of results (e.g. data from calibration certificates, manufacturers specifications, modelling, etc.). [Pg.166]

Irrespective of the specific protocols used, all carcinogenicity studies end with a statistical comparison of tumor proportions between treated and control groups. This analysis is necessary because the control incidence of most tumor types is rarely zero. In the unlikely case that a type of tumor is found in treated animals but not in concurrent or appropriate historical controls, it is reasonable to conclude that the tumor is drug-related without statistical analysis. [Pg.312]
