Static light scattering measurement

In a series of papers [216,217], Nakata and Nakagawa have studied the coil-globule transition by static light scattering measurements on poly(methyl methacrylate) in a selective solvent. They have found that the chain expansion factor, a2 = R2/R20, plotted against the reduced temperature, r = 1 - 0/T, first decreases with decreasing r, as it should be, but then begins to increase (see, e.g., Fig. 2 presented in [217]) In the authors opinion, the increase of... [Pg.85]

By using the method of cumulants, we determined ryv. With values of Z, A2 and M obtained from static light scattering measurements, we obtained DT and f from the slope of a plot of r /K2 versus K2 at different concentrations. By plotting DT against concentration, we estimated Dr 9 70 x 10 ° cm2/sec and kd = -5.10 x 10 g/g. The concentration dependence of the f values suggests that for large particles, internal motions have a measurable effect on translational motions. Thus, we expect that Dg has a concentration dependence. [Pg.124]

The static light-scattering measurements described in the previous section provide a measure of the time-averaged scattered intensity. On the contrary, dynamic light scattering follows the random motion of molecules in solution called Browiuan... [Pg.239]

From these data determine the second virial coefficient and the theta temperature of poly(a-methyl styrene) in cyclohexane, knowing that K = K hl AhlAcf, where K = 18.17 mol cm , the refractive index increment (d /dc) is 0.199 ml gr, and the temperature dependence of the refractive index is expressed by = -0.0005327 x T (°C) + 1.446. Static light-scattering measurements were carried out by Zimm (1948b) on polystyrene in butanone at 340 K at two concentrations. [Pg.250]

Figure 5 Particle size for a 10% com oil-in-water emulsion measured by ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy (Malvern Ultrasizer, Malvern, UK) and a static light-scattering measurement (LA-900, Horiba Instmments, Irvine, CA) of a dilution (O < 0.05%) of the same emulsion. Both techniques give comparable results, but ultrasound is reliable in more realistic, concentrated emulsions. Einaga and Fujisawa [63] carried out DLS measurements on benzene solutions of PS in order to characterise the viscoelastic properties. Static light scattering measurements of chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THE) solutions have been used to characterise copolymers of polymethyl methacrylate and bendazole dyes [64]. Cametti and co-workers [65] have carried out both static and DLS measurements on THE, toluene, and chloroform solutions of polyphenylacetylene. Each solvent produces a different effect on the pristine structure of polyphenylacetylene. [Pg.441]
