State of gas

Work on plasmas has roots extending back to the Greeks who found that amber mbbed with various materials tended to attract certain objects. The concept of plasma as the fourth state of matter can be traced to Sir William Crookes (2) in 1879. "So distinct are these phenomena from anything which occurs in air or gas at the ordinary tension, that we are led to assume that we are here brought face to face with Matter in a Fourth state or condition, a condition so far removed from the State of gas as a gas is from a Hquid." This description has been shown to be accurate over many years of experimentation and appHcation of plasmas. [Pg.106]

The first is transport. The air, with its variable components, requires the inspiratory activity of the respiratory muscles—namely, the diaphragm and intercostals (the muscle between the ribs). The action of these muscles is under both voluntary and involuntary central nervous system control thus, gas flow can be adjusted to maintain a steady state of gas exchange. Air must also be provided to the upper airway for speech. [Pg.109]

Borisov S.M. Kogarko, DoklAkadN 149, 623-25 (1963) CA 59, 376(1963) (The zone existing between the shock-wave fronts and the reaction zone was studied. The configuration of this zone and the state of gas in it were investigated exptly. The gaseous CH4 +O mixt was detonated at 30 mm in a tube 65 mm x 4 m. The exist-... [Pg.561]

Without considering transient regimes, we find the asymptotic laws which are satisfied by the wave and the state of gas compressed by it during the motion of the piston (which is long compared to the time of the chemical... [Pg.155]

To stabilize the catalytically active state of Ga, RGS domains distribute binding energy over the entire Ga interaction surface (Fig. 7B). Mutations at conserved residues in all three RGS4 contact zones impair GAP activity, and the effects of some of these mutations are thermodynamically additive (Chen et al., 1997 Natochin et al, 1998b Posner et al., 1999 ... [Pg.45]

As products are removed from the extraction and regeneration columns, gas losses are unavoidable. To maintain constant pressure within the extraction system a refill mechanism is installed, which takes the state of gas into account. [Pg.624]
