Starting the JHA Process

Training supervisors to complete JHAs requires detailed instruction. The proper method of evaluating a job from start to finish must be thoroughly discussed. The proper placement of job steps, hazards, and safe procedures on the forms needs special emphasis. The completed forms must be systematically discussed and evaluated in formal training sessions with supervisors. Simply reading this information as a guide on how to complete JHAs will not ensure a quality program hands-on workshops are necessary to assure quality work. [Pg.282]

There are three main methods to use when completing JHA s each method may have a plus or minus associated with it. [Pg.282]

Supervisor-employee. This process allows the supervisor to observe and discuss the job being performed at the work site with the employee. The employee should be skilled at the job so that he/she can give insight to all of its details. Much can be gained by asking the employee questions about actual job details and hazards. After all, who knows more about how the job gets done Of the three methods listed, this one is the most effective for information gathering, employee involvement, and efficiency. [Pg.282]

Select the right person to observe. The person selected should be experienced at the job and cooperative. If more than one employee is doing the job, select the enqiloyee who will get the most out of the JHA. Be sure to explain what JHA is all about and what you intend to do before starting. Let him/her know that you are relying on his/her experience to complete a quality JHA. When complete, discuss the findings with the [Pg.282]

Any JHA completed by a group or committee should be given to an individual who is skilled in JHA so that a comprehensive document can be developed. If the discussion leader is skilled in JHA, the process can be completed at the group meeting. [Pg.282]


Prior to starting the JHA process, it is necessary to develop a complete list of jobs in the warehouse. Figure 17-1 can be used for this process. This listing of jobs could be started in a classroom setting or each supervisor could develop a list and give it to management in the preparation of a master list. Supervisors could pool their thoughts to be sure all jobs in the warehouse are considered for the list. [Pg.279]
