Stapled permeability

In selecting cloths made from synthetic materials, one must account for the fact that staple cloths provide a good retentivity of solid particles due to the short hairs on their surface. However, cake removal is often difficult from these cloths - more than from cloths of polyfilament and, especially, monofilament fibers. The type of fiber weave and pore size determine the degree of retentivity and permeability. The objective of the process, and the properties of particles, suspension and cake should be accounted for. The cloth selected in this maimer should be confirmed or corrected by laboratory tests. Such tests can be performed on a single filter. These tests, however, provide no information on progressive pore plugging and cloth wear. However, they do provide indications of expected filtrate pureness, capacity and final cake wetness. [Pg.151]

Meanwhile, measurements of water vapour permeability of woven fabrics have indicated that in the lower ranges of fabric density, the main path of water vapour transfer is through the air spaces between fibers and yarns. This covers the densities characteristic of most apparel fabrics made from staple fibers, although filament yarn fabrics may be woven to higher densities in which the kind of fiber itself in the passage of water vapour, it is necessary to account for the water vapour passage through air spaces. [Pg.253]

Verdine and coworkers reported their first success with Bcl-2 family proteins using a stapled peptide analog of the proapoptotic Bid BH3 domain [37]. The hydrocarbon-crosslinked peptide was shown to bind Bcl-xL at the same binding site as wild-type Bid BH3 and with increased affinity. Importantly, the hydrocarbon crosslink rendered the stapled peptide cell permeable, where the wild-type peptide was not. In cell-based assays, stapled Bid BH3 was shown to sensitize cancer cells to Bax mediated apoptosis. In mice with leukemia xenografts, stapled Bid BH3 treatment consistently suppressed tumor growth. [Pg.213]

Based on the potential of variation during their manufacture, lyocell fibers can be processed into fabrics as staple fibers or as filament yarns in traditional processes. Lyocell fabrics such as wovens, nonwovens, technical textiles, or even papers may differ in their handle and look. The degree of fibrillation influences properties such as air permeability, filtration capability, and so forth (Burger et al, 1995). [Pg.61]
