Stamen hair data

There are also other data, mostly from older literature, on auxin-mediated stimulation of cytoplasmic streaming in epidermal cells of various roots [99-101] and in Tradescantia stamen hair cells [102]. Some of this work deserves to be followed up in the light of current interest in the actomyosin cytoskeleton. Regrettably, no data seem to exist on the effects of cytokinins on cytoplasmic streaming. 

In experimental situations, the number of stamens to be scored is limited by the technical personnel and facilities available or by the number of stock plants. However, it is particularly important to collect all possible data from such expensive and nonrepeatable experiments as Biosatellite 11.(17,32-34,47,48) In that experiment, all of the stamen hairs from all of the flowers were scored. The number of flowers was limited by the relatively small sample size allowed (Fig. 5B) and the environmental stresses of the 2-day orbital flight. 

Once the stamen hairs are mapped in this fashion, computer programs can be devised to analyze the data as required by the experimenter. 

III. CHARACTEMSTIC DATA OBTAINED FROM THE STAMEN-HAIR SYSTEM... 

Descriptions of the types and combinations of visible somatic mutations or aberrations found in stamen hairs and details of the computer-oriented scoring techniques are given. Several types of data characteristically obtained from the stamen-hair system are discussed. These include cell mutation frequencies and their dose-response curves, relative biological effectiveness, cell survival curves, mutation rates, and relationships of specific aberrant cell types to each other, to the cell number in the hair, and to their positions within the hair.
