C.ER. 745.82(a)(2). The renovator must test each component that will be affected by the renovation. Component is defined in 40 C.ER. 745.83 as a design or structural element or fixture. Each component is distinguished from the other components by form, function, and location. For example, crown moldings, fireplaces and hand rails are all components. To qualify for the exemption, although the renovator must test each component affected by the renovation, if the components make up a structure such as the stair treads and risers of the same staircase, the renovator only needs to test one of the components. The renovator must test all of the components if they appear to have been repainted or refinished separately. [Pg.634]

Slope The slope of a stairway is the ratio of riser height to tread depth. The preferred slope for stairs is about 30-35 degrees from horizontal. Standards differ on actual values and slopes may fall between 20 and 50 degrees. Tread and riser dimensions should have dimensions that are easy to create using a tape or mle. Otherwise, it is difficult to lay them out or to buy them. Table 11-6 lists some combinations of tread and riser dimensions that result in slopes between 30 and 40 degrees. [Pg.133]

Stairs Standards specify various characteristics of stairs. Included are clear width, tread and riser dimensions, head room, distance between landings, and landing dimensions. There are also winder, spiral and curved stair specifications. There are other details about stairs including handrails, guardrails, stairs enclosures, and other features. [Pg.237]

The ends of stair rail systems and handrails shall be constructed so that they do not constitute a projection hazard. Handrails and top rails that are used as handrails shall be at least 3 inches (7.6 cm) from other objects. Stair rails shall be not less than 28 in. (71 cm) nor more than 37 in. (94 cm) from the upper surface of the stair rail to the surface of the tread, in line with the face of the riser at the forward edge of the tread. [Pg.100]

Another commonly cited reason for not supporting the use of test kits by certified renovators was the lack of any sampling protocol in the regulation. A related concern was that the training in sampling techniques and protocols in the lead-based paint inspector course could not be shortened to fit within the 8-hour renovator course and still retain all of the necessary information. EPA wishes to make it clear that the 8-hour renovator course will not train renovators in how to select components for sampling because the certified renovator must use a test kit on each component affected by the renovation. The only exception to this is when the components make up an integrated whole, such as the individual stair treads and risers in a staircase. [Pg.119]
