The stabilised austenitic stainless steels for cladding contain an alloying element (niobium), which forms stable grain boundary carbides. This prevents chromium depletion along the grain boundaries and makes the material immune to stress corrosion cracking. Non-stabilised material was used for the first layer because the thermal expansion coefficient of the material is closer to that of the low-alloy pressure vessel material. The presence of niobium in the second layer allows performance of so-called retrospective dosimetry in the RPV inner surface by machining out some scraps for further chemical separation and activity measurement to determine real neutron fluence on the RPV inner surface. [Pg.51]

However, when stable-unstable fracture occurs (between Transitions 0 and I), evidence of secondary crack nucleation has been obtained by SEM on postmortem fracture surfaces. These cracks lead to parabolic markings ahead of the main blunt crack propagating in the plastic zone. Transport of stable isotopes in a moving fluid phase is called advection. Here infiltrating fluids move the isotopic species of interest. Fluid flow is restricted to connected pore spaces. The amount of connected pore space and the manner of connection determines the permeability of a rock. The diameter of the median crack is comparable with the indent size, and a median crack is not visible in a polycrystalline, opaque material. The driving force for nucleation of the median crack is the elastic tensile stress developed normal to the indentation direction at the elastic-plastic boundary when the external load is relaxed.
