Stabilizing agents diethanolamine

Diethanolamine has also been used to form the soluble salts of active compounds, such as iodinated organic acids that are used as contrast media. As a stabilizing agent, diethanolamine prevents the discoloration of aqueous formulations containing hexamethylenetetramine-1,3-dichloropropene salts. 

This compound is prepared from diethanolamine and nitric acid with acetic anhydride as a dehydrating agent and in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a catalyst. The nitration product is stabilized by boiling in water, followed by dissolution in acetone and reprecipitation with water.
