In nickel and palladium dithiobenzoato complexes, four-membered chelate rings are formed (366), whereas, in the corresponding phenyl-dithio acetates [M2(S2CCH2Ph)4], the dithio ligands act as bridging groups between the two metal atoms, with the formation of binuclear units (367). The molecular structure of the latter compounds shows that each metal atom is coordinated to four sulfur atoms and to the other metal atoms in a square-pyramidal geometry. Other evidence for... [Pg.258]

The square pyramidal geometry of CIF5 completes our inventory of molecular shapes. Figure 9-26 summarizes the characteristics of atoms with steric number 6. [Pg.630]

C09-0129. Tellurium compounds, which are toxic and have a hideous stench, must be handled with extreme care. Predict the formula of the tellurium-fluorine molecule or ion that has the following molecular geometry (a) bent (b) T-shaped (c) square pyramid (d) trigonal bipyramid (e) octahedron and (Q seesaw. [Pg.652]

If the radical is square pyramidal (C4 ) Fe(CO)5+ (1), the principal axes of the g-matrix must be the molecular axes (the C4 axis and normals to the reflection planes). The iron atom and the carbon of the axial CO group would have the full symmetry of the group and so these hyperfine matrices would share principal axes with the g-matrix. The four equatorial carbonyl carbons, on the other hand, lie in reflection planes, but not on the C4-axis and so are symmetry-required to share only one principal axis with the g-matrix. In fact, the major matrix axes for the equatorial carbons are tilted slightly in the -z direction from the ideal locations along the x and y axes. The g-matrix suggests that the metal contribution is dz2 and the iron hyperfine matrix then can be used to estimate about 55% iron 3d and 34% axial carbon 2pz spin density. The spin density on the equatorial carbons then is mostly negative and due to spin polarization. [Pg.74]

These conclusions can be drawn by simple inspection of the molecular orbitals of PHS. The next question is the energetics of the interconversions of the various conformations. The result sketched in Fig. 27 refers to the Berry pseudorotation (J5) process of PHS. The square pyramid is a transition state for isomerization of the trigonal bipyramid, but the barrier is extremely small, in agreement with available experimental evidence. The more complex process ... [Pg.29]

The hypervalent chalcogen chemistry has been developed to higher coordinated species with various ligands,7 10 where TBP changes to square pyramidal (SP) or octahedral (Oh), etc. Additional atomic orbitals of E, such as an 5-orbital, may operate to stabilize the structures.10b The concept is also extended over linear a-bonds constructed by m ( > 4) atoms with n electrons (extended hypervalent bonds mc-ne (in > 4)).11 14 The approximate molecular orbital model for mc-ne (m > 4) is also exhibited in Scheme la, exemplified by 4c-6e. [Pg.645]
