Creativity and innovation are the keys to bringing designs to the marketplace. To be a successful sports engineer, you must understand the sport, the performance criteria, and the perception of the fans. You must appreciate the mental state of both the athlete and the audience. Equipment must be designed to keep the athlete safe and to lessen injury. The social appeal of color, function, and trend must act as a unit. The materials should be the best for the conditions or developed to advance the sport. Lastly, the equipment must be thoroughly tested and evaluated. If problems are detected, you must work on redesign until your designs pass the important test and evaluation process. [Pg.278]

Sports engineering is the application of engineering principles to the study of sports equipment and sports venues. This field most closely resembles mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering uses physics and mathematics to study and design physical processes and mechanical systems. Sports engineering uses the same techniques to study and... [Pg.1731]

This area of sports engineering has overlap with biomechanics since it involves the interaction of the skin and other tissues with the sports equipment or sports surface. [Pg.1732]

The varied requirements for each sport results in a wide array of specialization for sports engineers. [Pg.1732]
