Splash hazard

Wear chemical goggles as a minimum use goggles and lace shield for splash hazard. 

Wear protective eyeglasses as a minimum use goggle sand face shield for splash hazards.

Eye Protection At a minimum chemical goggles will be worn. For splash hazards use goggles and face shield. 

Safety shields should be used for protection against possible explosions or splash hazards. Laboratory equipment should be shielded on all sides so that there is no line-of-sight exposure of personnel. The front sashes of conventional laboratory exhaust hoods can provide shielding. However, a portable shield should also be used when manipulations are performed, particularly with hoods that have vertical-rising doors rather than horizontal-sliding sashes. 

Machine guarding Because machinery and equipment can be a major source of impact and splash hazards, many come with guards/screens/shields. 

The rule is always wear chemical splash goggles in labs where chemicals are used. As noted above, laboratories without splash hazards are the exception, not the rule. Any lab involved in the use of liquids or potentially hazardous or infectious substances requires chemical splash goggles. Chemicals are used in chemistry, biology, physics, and geology laboratories, and in art departments and theater scene shops. The chemicals don t know what lab they are in ... 

We also note that laser safety glasses and laser goggles are not chemical splash goggles. Persons using lasers and wearing laser eye protection may or may not be handling solutions that pose a splash hazard but if such hazards exist in labs where lasers are used, chemists need to be mindful of what level of splash protection is afforded by the laser eye protection that they are using. If there is potential for a splash, a face shield should be worn.

Ultimately, we believe that you are responsible for your own safety. If your institution requires (only) safety glasses, we encourage you to still assess the risk of various experiments and, if you consider splash hazards to be present on some days, you may choose to wear splash goggles for your protection. This would require having both forms of PPE at hand every week in the lab.
