Carbamate hydrolysis is frequendy observed as the initial reaction for pesticides having carbamate bonds, such as aldicarb, carbofuran, carbaryl, and benomyl (eq. 12) (19). Numerous genera of carbamate-hydroly2ing bacteria have been identified, including Pseudomonas, Jhihrobacter, Bacillus, Nocardia, Achromobacter, Flavobacterium, Streptomyces, Alcaligenes, A spirillum, Micrococcus, and Bhodococcus.

The kind of enantiomer [d-(-)- or l-(+)-] synthesized in the formation of the C4 intermediate varies. The acetoacetyl-CoA reductase (EC 1.1.1.36), which is NADPH-dependent, stereoselectively reduces acetoacetyl-CoA to d-(-)-3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA (R. eutropha [15]). The NADH-dependent reductase catalyzes the reduction of acetoacetyl-CoA to L-(+)-3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA. Afterwards two stereospecific crotonyl-CoA hydratases, l-(+)- and D-(-)-speci-fic, convert the L-(+)-3-hydroxybutyryl-CoA into the D-(-)-isomer (Rhodo-spirillum rubrum [16]).

The test based on motility inhibition of the bacterium Spirillum volutants is a very simple and rapid test for the qualitative screening of wastewater samples or extracts [48]. The organisms are observed under the microscope immediately after the addition of the test solution. The maintenance of a bacterial culture is necessary as in the previous type of assay.
