Spiral break

In (g) an elongated spiral breaks up into a less-elongated ring and a less-elongated spiral. In (h) an elongated ring source becomes more and more symmetric before completely disappearing. [Pg.88]

Torsion Torsion and torsion stress involve rotational loads on a material. A section of the material must be retrained in order for a torsional load to be appUed. A torsional failure on a shaft will create a somewhat spiraled break compared to a bending failure for the same material. Compare the difference in fractures between a piece of chalk when you simply bend it in your hands and when you hold one end tight and twist the other end. [Pg.87]

The cores of the spiral waves need not be stationary and can move in periodic, quasi-periodic or even chaotic flower trajectories [42, 43]. In addition, spatio-temporal chaos can arise if such spiral waves break up and the spiral wave fragments spawn pairs of new spirals [42, 44]. [Pg.3066]

Flame Arrestors and Explosion Reliefs. The flame trap is constructed of strips of corrugated and flat steel ribbon wound in a spiral. It breaks up a flame in the very small passages between the corrugations where the flame is quenched and extinguished. [Pg.282]

Another design thift Philip Stewart of the University of Oxford has revived and argued for is toe spud-form periodic system, and it hs received a good deal of recent attention. As Stewart contends, the conventional table fails to emphasize the continuity in toe sequence of the dementi Spiral systems stress continuity rather than implying breaks between the noble gright-hand edge and the alkali metals at the left edge. [Pg.128]

These homes were battlegrounds, where skirmishes frequently erupted over the real or suspected incursions of the drug-using family member who was almost invariably blamed for family conflicts and problems. One can see that even just considering the commonly experienced problem of theft indicates a spiralling capacity for severe and enduring stress that was deeply divisive and strained family relations often to breaking point. [Pg.35]

You turn back to Sally. Zollner devised three rests for Slade to see if Slade could use the fourth dimension to perform miracles. One He gave Slade two oak rings that were to be interlocked without breaking them. Two He gave Slade a snail shell and watched to see if a right spiral could be turned into a left spiral, and vice versa. Three He gave Slade a rubber band and asked him to place a knot in one strand of the band. Actually it was band made from dried gut, but you get the idea. ... [Pg.125]

Looking at the melt fracture of specific polymers, we see many similarities and a few differences. Polystyrene extrudates begin to spiral from smooth at t 105 N/m2, and at higher shear stresses, they are grossly distorted. Visual observations show a wine glass entrance pattern with vortices that are stable at low stress values and spiral into the capillary and subsequently break down, as t is increased. Clearly, melt fracture is an entrance instability phenomenon for this polymer. [Pg.696]

Undoubtedly, the most promising modehng of the cardiac dynamics is associated with the study of the spatial evolution of the cardiac electrical activity. The cardiac tissue is considered to be an excitable medium whose the electrical activity is described both in time and space by reaction-diffusion partial differential equations [519]. This kind of system is able to produce spiral waves, which are the precursors of chaotic behavior. This consideration explains the transition from normal heart rate to tachycardia, which corresponds to the appearance of spiral waves, and the fohowing transition to fibrillation, which corresponds to the chaotic regime after the breaking up of the spiral waves, Figure 11.17. The transition from the spiral waves to chaos is often characterized as electrical turbulence due to its resemblance to the equivalent hydrodynamic phenomenon. [Pg.349]

Hollow fiber membrane modules can be backwashed to remove foulants whereas tubular and most spiral configurations cannot be backwashed. Backwashing of traditional spiral-wound modules would break the glue lines holding the membrane leaves together or cause blistering and delamination of the membrane from the backing in both spiral and tubular modules (TriSep Corporation has recently developed a back-washable, spiral-wound module (SpiraSep—US patent 6,755,970), that is used in immersed systems see below). [Pg.333]

After extensive use, the silencer should be disassembled and cleaned. The screen should be scrubbed clean or replaced, as well as the baffles in the endcap. Be sure to Inspect the spiral baffle assembly for any breaks in the soldered washer spiral, and resolder them. [Pg.60]

Rotating spiral patterns can be formed when target patterns break down due to interference with other reaction fronts, or due to interference with themselves across the boundary conditions. They can also be formed spontaneously, when a new reaction front starts rotating around a core. We have not been able to determine the microscopic mechanism that causes a reaction front to start rotating. [Pg.774]
