Spin component conservation

A further interesting result concerns spin component conservation. Each rotational level of this 2S state has two spin components, one (termed F ) with the spin and rotational angular momentum vectors parallel, and the other (F2) having them antiparallel. Excitation of an F component results in transfer primarily to F- components of other rotational levels, and similarly for F2 excitation. In a collision, the OH would as soon exchange several hundred cm" of energy as flip its spin around at no energy cost. Similar results were also observed in the fluorescence scans of the NH molecule (16). [Pg.13]

Bryce-Smith and Gilbert [37] postulate the presence along the singlet path-way of a biradical intermediate, prefulvene, with fused three-membered and five-membered rings. A triplet biradical of that structure was found by Oikawa et al. [38] in their computational investigation of the lowest triplet pathway. The Ti states of benzene and benzvalene have the same space-symmetry (Bi) in C2y and Si(Ai) (but not S2(-Bi) ) can indeed cross to the T ,(5i) triplet component at the surface crossing. Spin-non-conservative formation of the triplet prefulvene biradical from Si can therefore not be excluded, particularly since fulvene is produced along with benzvalene [37]. [Pg.257]

The relationship between different components of orbital angular momentum such as Lz and Lx can be investigated by multiple SG experiments as discussed for electron spin and photon polarization before. The results are in fact no different. This is a consequence of the noncommutativity of the operators Lx and Lz. The two observables cannot be measured simultaneously. While total angular momentum is conserved, the components vary as the applied analyzing field changes. As in the case of spin or polarization, measurement of Lx, for instance, disturbs any previously known value of Lz. The structure of the wave function does not allow Lx to be made definite when Lz has an eigenvalue, and vice versa. [Pg.233]

Energy transfer by the exchange mechanism will occur provided the spin states before and after overlap obey the Wigner spin conservation rule that is, provided the overall spin states before and after overlap have common components (Table 6.1). [Pg.106]

For eigenstates, only density matrix blocks that conserve the number of each spin type are nonvanishing. It is easily seen that two components of the 1-RDM, namely, and must vanish. One obtains... [Pg.397]

Here MA, MB, MA , and MB are the z-components of the spins of A and of B. Such collisions are usually treated7,34,142,177 in an adiabatic approximation using spin-free Hamiltonian and spin-free potential curves. Thus, MA and Mb are only approximate local quantum numbers during a collision and so may change. The total M quantum number is, however, conserved... [Pg.20]

Of course, predictable differences between He(2 5) and He(23S) occur regarding the polarization of Penning ions and electrons caused by total spin conservation. The fact that a component of spin angular momentum is conserved in Pgl has been demonstrated by the observation of the transfer of spin polarization from optically pumped He(23S) atoms to the Penning ions of cadmium, zinc, and strontium.72 The polarization was detected by measuring the polarization of the light emitted from the excited 2Ds/2 ions in 2Ds/2- 2D2/2 transitions. If a component of spin angular momentum is conserved, we may write the Pgl process as... [Pg.457]

Assuming that the ion is formed with equal probability in states of different mt, the population of the different m, sublevels of 2Ds/2 is in the ratios 0 1 2 3 4 5, which gives rise to polarization of the observed light emitted in the 2D5/2—>2DJ/2 transition.72 It may be noted that the exchange mechanism of Pgl" implies the conservation of a component of spin angular momentum. [Pg.457]

Conservation of a component of spin angular momentum in Pgl was also demonstrated by showing that Pgl electrons formed by ionization of argon are polarized by optically oriented He(235) in a flowing afterglow.73... [Pg.457]

Since the Hamiltonian (5) conserves the total spin the quantum states of the grain may be characterized by the values of the z-component of the total spin... [Pg.190]

The simplest and most straightforward idea for producing collisionally polarized molecules in a thermal cell consists of using collisions with the participation of particles which are polarized in the laboratory frame. It seems that the earliest one was the method based on collisions of atoms which have been optically pumped (optically oriented in their ground state) by the Kastler method see Section 1.1, Fig. 1.1. If the gas constitutes a mixture of a molecular and an atomic component, the conditions being specially created in such a way as to produce such optical orientation of the atoms, we must expect, from considerations of spin conservation in molecular reactions, that polarization of the molecular component must also emerge. [Pg.222]

The model Hamiltonian (20) can be solved in various spin spaces in which S or its z-component M is conserved. For a given conjugated molecule with N 71-electrons, the number of linearly independent covalent VB structures in a certain... [Pg.571]

The essential feature of a case (a) basis set for a 3 E molecule is that the electron spin S is strongly coupled to the rotational angular momentum N to form the total angular momentum J. The component of S along the internuclear axis, S, is therefore a conserved quantum number, but N is not and the basis functions are of the form r], A ./. S. 22 Mj). In this basis the effective Hamiltonian can be conveniently written in the form... [Pg.649]

The sum + f is called the absolute vorticity. It represents the spin of air parcels relative to a coordinate system fixed to the Earth and of the planetary vorticity (represented by the Coriolis parameter f), which accounts for the fact that the coordinate system is rotating at angular vorticity 0. As shown by equation (3.39), even in the absence of frictional forces, the absolute vorticity is not a conserved quantity. Its tendency is proportional to the horizontal component of the wind convergence. If this component is positive, absolute vorticity filaments will gather closer together, increasing the magnitude of the air parcel... [Pg.71]
