Spencer, Percy

The domestic microwave oven is a serendipitous invention. Percy Spencer was working for Raytheon, a company heavily involved with radar during World War II, when he noticed the heat generated by a radar antenna. In 1947 an appliance called a Ra-darange appeared on the market for food processing. The first kitchen microwave oven was introduced by Tappan in 1955. Sales of inexpensive domestic ovens now represent a multibillion-dollar (euro) annual market. [Pg.517]

Much of microwave technology was developed during World War 11 for radar applications. The technology was developed secretly it became available for public use only after the war. In 1951, AT T s new microwave radio-relay skyway carried a telephone call via a series of 107 microwave towers that were spaced about 30 miles apart this was the first microwave application that could carry telephone conversations across the United States via radio (as opposed to wire or cable). The system could also carry television signals three weeks after the first telephone call, at least 30 million people saw and heard President Harry Truman open the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco. Then, in 1946, Percy Spencer, an engineer at the Raytheon Corporation, developed the now-ubiquitous micro-wave oven. [Pg.1223]

The microwave oven was a by-product of radar research. Raytheon engineer Percy Spencer was testing a new vacuum tube called a magnetron and found that a candy bar in his pocket had melted. Deducing that electromagnetic energy was responsible, he placed some popcorn kernels near the tube. The kernels sputtered and popped. His next trial was with an egg, which exploded in short order. [Pg.1575]

The idea for the microwave oven was discovered by engineer Percy LeBaron Spencer of the Raytheon Corporation in 1946 while working on a radar system. He later developed the first micro-wave oven. Infrared heating elements were used in many appliances, such as hair dryers by the 1990 s, demonstrating another novel use of electromagnetic energy. [Pg.1978]

Microwave oven (Percy L. Spencer) The microwave oven grew out of the micro-wave generator, the magnetron tube, becoming more affordable. [Pg.2062]
