In inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, isobaric interference occurs between species with the same mass and charge. Interference can be eliminated if the mass spectral resolution is sufficiently great or by dissociating an interfering polyatomic species with a collision cell. When laser ablation is used to sample a solid, matrix-matched standards are often necessary for quantitative analysis. 

Heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) spectroscopy is a standard two-dimensional NMR technique. The resolution of 31P 1H CPMAS spectra is generally not sufficient to unequivocally detect the HP042 ions and the apatitic OH- ions in bone or dentin samples.15 In this regard, the breakthrough came from the first application of 31P 1H HETCOR to HAp and bone samples,24 where the correlation peak at 0.2 and 3 ppm of the 1H and 31P dimensions, respectively, has been established as the spectral marker of apatitic OH- ions. Spectral resolution is another critical parameter that can affect observed band wavenumbers due to the overlapping of close bands, which can cause erroneous identifications of the material when comparing with standard wavenumber tables and spectral databases. The technical requirements for the construction of a miniaturized Raman spectrometer suitable for extraterrestrial planetary exploration could force a rather low spectral resolution, and so new databases adapted to low resolution spectral data would then be necessary. Nevertheless, good quality spectra are now being obtained from miniaturised Raman spectrometers such as that shown in Figure 1-18, which weighs one kilo. An example of the Raman spectrum of an extremophile obtained from this instrument in our laboratories is shown in Figure 1-19.
