Species and Cultivar Effects on Granule Morphology

Differences in average starch granule size in cultivars from a single species have been also reported. For example, average starch granule diameter ranged from 8.2 to 17.5 pm in 12 sorghum cultivars,116 from 17.8 to 25.6 pm in six triticale cultivars,158 and from 3.8 to 5.7pm in 10 rice cultivars.124 

In contrast to the species-specific shape and size of reserve starch granules, transitory starch granules in chloroplasts appear similar in all species.18 In chloroplasts, the assimilatory starch granules are small and disk-shaped.17
