Allopatric speciation

Field and laboratory bioassay of chemosignals from related sympatric and allopatric species (overlapping and discrete distributions) are essential to an understanding of the relatedness or otherwise of functionally active compounds. The semiochemicals involved in speciation surely utilise the main and vomeronasal senses, but their relative contributions cannot be predicted at present. [Pg.68]

As noted above, the hypothesis appears to be composed of two parts. The first is Everything is everywhere, that microorganisms are ubiquitous According to advocates of the ubiquity hypothesis. .. the vast population sizes of microorganisms drive ubiquitous dispersal. .. and make local extinction virtually impossible. Geographic isolation is therefore absent and as a result, allopatric speciation should be rare or nonexistent, which would explain the perceived low global morphospecies diversity of microbial eukaryotes. .. (Vanormelingen et al.. [Pg.12]

Several species are potentially capable of maintaining transcontinental connectivity between populations through long-distance dispersal, which could prevent population differentiation even in remote islands, but it is clear that there are a number of cases in which isolation and allopatric speciation occur. How important then is long-distance dispersal in relation to endemism Surprisingly, only one of the eight endemic mosses of the British Isles produces... [Pg.214]

The degree to which pheromones are involved in speciation will probably remain speculative, inasmuch as allopatric speciation generally is not amenable to experimentation. It is clear that a bark beetle could alter its aggregation pheromone simply by selecting a host tree species that provides a precursor for a novel pheromone. If speciation occurs primarily in an allopatric mode, then changes in the pheromone communication channel that effect reproductive isolation may come about or at least be reinforced after initial changes in the communication system that occurred in isolation. [Pg.377]
