2 Special features of avian biochemistry and molecular biology 

In this book, most emphasis is given to areas where some aspect of the biochemistry or molecular biology is either unique or has particular importance in birds. Areas in which there is little to add to what is well known for mammals have been given either less emphasis or have not been included, since these are included in most standard textbooks (see Mathews van Holde, 1990 Zubay, 1993). Some of the special features of birds that have been the focus of research are outlined below and then discussed in more detail in subsequent chapters.
