Spasmolytic medicinal plants

OC-Bisabolol. a-Bisabolol (99) occurs in camomile flowers and has been shown to be the main antiphlogistic and spasmolytic component of the European medicinal plant. The use of bisabolol is recommended mainly for its pharmacodynamic properties in cosmetic preparations for skin protection.

Anethum graveolens L. (Dill) The essential oil (3.3%) of the mature dried frait of this plant (33) contains mainly carvone and phellandrene. The oil (2.5-5%) from other countries has been reported to contain (5)-(+)-carvone (18-81%), dihydrocarvone (0.1 to 62%) and (R)-(+)-hmonene (10-50 %) (34). Dill is exotic to Kenya and the seeds are used as spices. Although the leaves are used in many countries, in Kenya they are rarely used. The oil has spasmolytic and antimicrobial effects (34). Dill water is a product containing this oil which is used as a carminative, antispasmodic and as gripe medicine for infants. 

A Mexican research group produced a plant remedy from P. gua-java L. leaves under the coded registry QG-5. The natural medicine had a standardized concentration of flavonoids (estimated as quercetin 1 mg/500 mg) and it was presented in capsules for oral administration to 50 adult patients with acute diarrheic disease. There was a control group n = 50), who received placebo capsules of the same size, taste, and color and the same administration routine (every 8 hours for 3 days). The phytodrug showed a relevant spasmolytic effect and succeed in decreasing the duration of abdominal pain (Lozoya etal. 2002).
