Spark discharge efficiency

Urey s suggestion was soon confirmed by Miller (1953) in a historic experiment, in which amino acids were produced from CH, HjO, and NH3 by an electric spark discharge. [The analogous synthesis with UV light was not achieved with high efficiency until much later (Sagan and Khare, 1971)]. A new scientific discipline,... [Pg.5]

In the case of methane, the charge exchange reactions produce CHx. These ions through multistep reactions lead to the formation of C2H2. This process is very efficient, and it is known in the literature that methane can efficiently be converted in to acetylene in the spark discharge xmder atmospheric pressure plasma conditions (Leutner Stokes, 1961 Yao et al., 2002). It indicates that even though it is started with methane, most of the methane will be converted in to acetylene under our plasma conditions. The acetylene produced in the... [Pg.245]

When corona occurs, current starts to flow in the secondary circuit and some dust particles are precipitated. As potential is increased, current flow and electric field strength increase until, with increasing potential, a spark jumps the gap between the discharge wire and the collecting surface. If this "sparkover" is permitted to occur excessively, destmction of the precipitator s internal parts can result. Precipitator efficiency increases with increase in potential and current flow the maximum efficiency is achieved at a potential just short of heavy sparking. [Pg.399]
