Spacers linking types

The synthesis of the first polymer-supported chiral Mn-salen derivatives was reported independently by Sivaram171 and Minutolo.171-173 Different monomeric Jacobsen-type units, containing two polymerizable vinyl groups, were copolymerized with styrene and divinylbenzene to yield the corresponding cross-linked polymers as a monolithic compact block.174-176 The less mobile system (Figure 19) with no spacer between the aromatic ring and the polymer backbone is less enantioselective. 

New distannenes linked through phenylene, biphenylene, or thiophene spacers have been prepared by reactions of the type shown in Equation (175) (Cp =pentamethylcyclopentadienyl),541 and the ansa-stannocene (Equation (176)) is formed in low yield when dimethylfulvene reacts with tin vapor.542... 

Most fluorescent PET molecular sensors, including pH indicators of this type, consist of a fluorophore linked to an amine moiety via a methylene spacer. Photo-induced electron transfer (see Chapter 4, Section 4.3), which takes place from amino groups to aromatic hydrocarbons, causes fluorescence quenching of the latter. When the amino group is protonated (or strongly interacts with a cation), electron transfer is hindered and a very large enhancement of fluorescence is observed. 

Rotaxane 316+ was specifically designed36 to achieve photoinduced ring shuttling in solution,37 but it also behaves as an electrochemically driven molecular shuttle. This compound has a modular structure its ring component is the electron donor macrocycle 2, whereas its dumbbell component is made of several covalently linked units.
