When materials are received to be used in the manufacture of a pharmaceutical product, an inspection (and possible testing) is usually necessary before the materials are accepted. Materials may be stored in a separate quarantined area until they are released and approved for use. The use of certified suppliers has allowed some materials to be received and accepted without additional inspection or testing. The certified supplier may provide a certificate of analysis dociimenting that the material meets the required specifications. Certified suppliers are usually audited to insure that they meet the requirements for certification of the customer. 

There are many additives employed in the plastics industry. Among the most versatile is carbon black. It is used to provide colour, opacity, protection from ultraviolet light, electrical properties, thermal conductivity, and even reinforcement. Advanced production methods have enabled carbon black suppliers to develop a wide range of carbon black grades that, in turn, provide plastics processors with additive selections geared to specific end-use properties. Selection of the proper carbon black is critical to successful end-use performance. Unlike some plastics additives, carbon black is not simply added to the mix. It must be dispersed into a resin system, and the quality of the dispersion is essential to performance. This chapter discusses the fundamentals of carbon black, its selection in plastics applications, and dispersion equipment and techniques. 

The DOD and NASA programs generally involve an aerospace firm that works with material suppliers to develop a material for a specific performance goal. In addition, the Government provides some research and development (R D) funds so the risk to the materials developer is minimized. In a sense, this is a case of vertical integration in which DOD or NASA is the end user and manages the complete product development.
