Another type of frequently studied metalloproteins is the iron-sulfur (Fe-S) protein. It widely exists in all sorts of bacteria, plants, and animals, and plays a part in a wide range of biochemical processes. The best known function of iron sulfur protein is its role in the redox process of electron transfer. The active center is an iron sulfur cluster, through which several proteins link together with the coordination between the iron atoms in the cluster motif and sulfur atoms of cysteines in protein motifs. There are several major types of iron-sulfur proteins, i.e. the rubredoxin (Rb), ferredoxin, Rieske protein, and the high-potential iron-protein (HiPIP). [Pg.148]

Rubredoxin (Rb) acts as an electron carrier widely found in many sulfur-metabolizing organisms and is generally classified as iron-sulfur protein. Four cysteine sulfur atoms coordinate to a single iron atom in the iron-sulfur cluster. The Mossbauer data of the rubredoxin of Clostridium pasteurianum by Philipps et al. showed sextet lines corresponding to a high-spin Fe(III) in the oxidized state and a high-spin Fe(II) in the reduced state.  [Pg.148]
