Some Characteristics of Acrylic Polymers and Fibers

Most PAN based precursor fibers are made from copolymers, the predominant component of which, however, is acrylonitrile (in most cases 95% by weight). Consequently, most physical properties of the fibers are mainly determined by this highly polar monomer. 

In this Section, we review the relationship between intra- and intermolecular forces in polyacrylonitrile on the one hand, and those macroscopic properties of polymer and fiber, which are relevant to carbon fiber formation, on the other.
