Solid drying

Drying is the removal of water, or other volatile liquids, by evaporation. Most solid materials require drying at some stage in their production. The choice of suitable drying equipment cannot be separated from the selection of the upstream equipment feeding the drying stage. [Pg.426]

Mode of operation Generic type Feed condition Specific dryer types Jack- eted Suitable for heat-sensitive materials Suitable for vacuum service Retention or cycle time Heat transfer method Capacity Typical evaporation capacity [Pg.427]

Solutions, colloidal suspensions and emulsions, pumpable solids suspensions, pastes and sludges. [Pg.427]

Free-flowing powders, granular, crystalline or fibrous solids that can withstand mechanical handling. [Pg.427]

The overriding consideration in the selection of drying equipment is the nature and concentration of the feed. Drying is an energy-intensive process, and the removal of liquid by thermal drying will be more costly than by mechanical separation techniques. [Pg.428]

Drying equipment can be classified according to the following design and operating features  [Pg.426]

The material on solids drying is divided into two subsections, Solids-Drying Fundamentals, and Sohds-Drying Equipment. In this introductory part some elementary definitions are given. In solids-gas contacting equipment, the solids bed can exist in any of the following four conditions. [Pg.1173]
