Torvanol A and torvoside H isolated from Solanum torvum (76) showed antiviral activity (herpes simplex virus type 1) in vitro. The IC50 values were threefold less compared with the reference compound, acyclovir.

Five glycosides of the two new (25/ )-3 -amino-5a,22aO-spirostanes, isojurubidine and its 6a-hydroxy derivative isojuripidine, have been isolated from Solatium paniculatum (99,100), the structures of which may be of the same type as that of jurubine, the (255)-3)3-amino-5a-furostane 22a,26-diol-0(26)-j -D-g ucopyranoside from the same species and from Solanum torvum (112,168,169 cf. 3), but their structures have not yet been elucidated. 

The only isoflavonoid isolated from a solanaceous species is torvanol A discovered in the frnits of Solanum torvum Sw. This metabolite turned out to be a potassium salt of an nnnsnal 6-methoxyisoflavanol snlfate composed of a ferulic acid moiety C-5-linked to C-3 of 6-methoxychroman-4P-snlfate (Fig. 6.12). It exhibited moderate antiviral activity (herpes simplex virns type 1) (Arthan et al. 2002). However, low levels of genistein and daidzein, their methoxy derivatives, and not yet determined glycosides were regnlarly detected in leaves and flowers of several Nicotiana spp., Solanum dulcamara L., and S. lycopersicum L. snb nom. Lycopersicum escu-lentum Mill. (Mackova et al. 2006).
