Another way to control the EOF is to vary the composition of the surface-bonded sol-gel stationary phase [60]. A sol-gel ODS-coated column was prepared with significantly stronger EOF mobility than the uncoated column. It was found that the magnitude of EOF increases (shifts toward more negative values) when the percentage of organic modifier in the mobile phase was increased. [Pg.157]

Purely inorganic sol-gel silica coatings have also been used for mechanical protection of metals [51,54,55] and metal matrix composites [5,16,56]. The main disadvantage of purely inorganic vitreous Si02 coatings is their brittleness [33], and the use of multilayered systems is usually adopted. [Pg.1209]

The use of nanoclays, mainly montmorillonite family, as nanofillers for sol-gel silica coatings has been extensively used in the content range from 0.5 up to 5wt% [75]. Every hybrid matrbc-nanoclay composite is unique and the properties depend on (i) hybrid matrix and clay material, (ii) composition, and (Mi) fabrication route of the nanocomposite. [Pg.1218]

The sol—gel technique has been used mosdy to prepare alumina membranes. Figure 18 shows a cross section of a composite alumina membrane made by sHp coating successive sols with different particle sizes onto a porous ceramic support. SiUca or titanium membranes could also be made by the same principles. Unsupported titanium dioxide membranes with pore sizes of 5 nm or less have been made by the sol—gel process (57). [Pg.70]
