Receiver adapters or connectors. Various forms of receiver adapters are shown in Figs. 11, 56, 26-29. The simplest form. Fig. 11, 56, 26, carries a glass hook for securing it to the condenser by means of a rubber band from the side tube to the hook an improved form, incorporating two ground glass joints is shown in Fig. 11, 56, 27. A useful adapter is illustrated in Fig. 11, 56, 28 when employed at atmospheric pressure, a drying tube may be attached to the side tube, if desired in a distillation under reduced pressure, the side tube is connected to the pump. Extraction of steam distillates by solvents. The apparatus, depicted in Fig. 11,58, 7, may be employed for the continuous extraction of substances which are volatile in steam from their aqueous solutions or suspensions. When testing finished wire-rope tensile test specimens to their breaking strength, suitable sockets shall be attached by the correct method. The length of test specimen shall not be less than 3 ft (0.91 m) between sockets for wire ropes up to 1-in. (25.4 mm) diameter and not less than 5 ft (1.52 m) between sockets for wire ropes 1 -J-in. (28.6 mm) to 3-in. (77 mm) diameter. On wire ropes larger than 3 in. (77 mm), the clear length of the test specimen shall be at least 20 times the rope diameter. Attaching Socket. Preheat the socket to approximately 200°F (93°C). Slip socket over ends of wire. Distribute all wires evenly in the basket and flush with top of basket. Be sure socket is in line with axis of rope. [Pg.593]

Cleaning the Wires and Fittings. Different types of resin with different characteristics require varying degrees of cleanliness. The following cleaning procedure was used for one type of polyester resin with which over 800 tensile tests were made on ropes in sizes -J- in. (6.5 mm) to 3- -in. (90 mm) diameter without experiencing any failure in the resin socket attachment. [Pg.594]

Pouring the Resin. Controlled heat-curing (no open flame) at a temperature range of 250 to 300°F (121 to 149°C) is recommended and is required if ambient temperatures are less than 60°F (16°C) (which may vary with different resins). When controlled heat curing is not available and ambient temperatures are not less than 60°F (16°C), the attachment should not be disturbed and tension should not be applied to the socketed assembly for at least 24 hr. [Pg.594]

A convenient laboratory-scale storage device consists of a Schlenk tube (about 100 raL) with a Teflon valve in the side arm and a socket joint on top of the body of the tube. The stopper is the corresponding Teflon-seated ball joint attached to a small Teflon valve (Fig. 2), which allows the air in the space above the socket to be purged with nitrogen prior to closing the tube. The main manifold should be as long as possible to provide the greatest possible adaptability, and its end should be closed by a B.24 or B.29 socket and cone fitted with a tap this makes it possible to clean the line easily, and the outlet from the tap can have the glass blower s tube attached to it. A hemispherical socket, which takes the place of the acetabular cup and retains the spherical ball. This hemispherical socket typically is a metal cup affixed into the joint socket by mechanical attachments and lined with a suitable polymeric material so that the ball can rotate within the socket, and so that the stem, via the ball, can pivot and articulate. [Pg.85]

A routine operation usually proceeds as follows. First the head of the femur is sawn off. The socket in the pelvis (the acetabulum) is then made deeper with a cutting machine and subsequently the metal socket is stamped into the hip. This metal is then lined with plastic to facilitate sliding movements. The femur is scooped out with a rasp and filled with cement. This cement is a mixture of plastics which automatically polymerizes in the femur.
