Soap, wire drawing

This section refers to the use of quicklime as a component of continuous casting lubricants and of slaked lime as a lubricant carrier in wire drawing (the use of lime in greases and calcium soaps is described in section 31.13). [Pg.373]

Borax is used as a so-called lubricant carrier in metal-working processes, such as for instance wire drawing. It forms a lubrication system together with lubricants such as sodium or calcium stearate. At the high pressure in the drawing die, the stearate melts and fulfills the lubrication needs. Borax is not fused but will be dispersed as small solid particles in the stearate. It makes the Hquid soap more viscous and it is not so easily squeezed off from the deformation zone. The lubricating effect is improved. [Pg.813]

Barium soaps, especially of -> 12-hydroxystearic acid, are made after method 2 b. They are used as lubricants and costabilizers in PVC (- plas-tics additives), as wetting and dispersion aids in paints and in wire drawing. [Pg.188]

Cutting Soap,— When the soap is cold enough to he cut, the holts are detached from the iron frame (Fig. 2), and the sides and ends are removed and placed aside. The sides and ends of the block of soap are first scraped all over with the scraper, Fig. 22 it is then marked at each corner by means of the ganging stick (Fig. 15). A workman then takes the cutting wire (Fig. 23), and throws the loop over the block of Fig. 22. soap, when the wire is taken in hand by a second workman (see drawing, Fig. 24), who fits the wire into... [Pg.127]
