Many researchers are now attempting to answer that question. An important breakthrough in the field came in 1973 when two researchers at the Johns Hopkins University, Solomon Snyder and Candace Pert, discovered an essential key to the way in which natural body chemicals relieve pain and provide dramatic changes in the brain. [Pg.18]

In 1976, Ian Creese, David R. Burt, and Solomon H. Snyder of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, reported that the most effective schizophrenia medications are the ones that have the strongest affinity for dopamine receptors. Researchers also discovered drugs that increased the amount of dopamine inadvertently caused schizophrenic symptoms in patients. These findings led to the dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia—too much dopamine causes schizophrenia. [Pg.92]

There are a number of different structural types of CNS depressants. Their modes of action are putative, that is, they are generally unknown but we have some indirect evidence of mechanisms. Much of what is known arises from their observed effects and not necessarily from direct experimental evidence. In fact, some of the drugs we will discuss, such as the opiates, have been around for millenia, long before any biochemical theories concerning their actions were conjectured. In the case of the opiates, it was their known effects which led researchers like Solomon Snyder and Candace Pert to theorize about the existence of natural (endogenous) opiate neurotransmitters, which they eventually found in the lab. The PBS NOVA segment entitled "The Keys to Paradise" and available in the Cal Poly libray describes the discovery of endogenous opiates. [Pg.164]

The audacity to attempt such an integrated synthesis comes from two sources. One is Solomon Snyder s wonderful book Drugs and the Brain, which I reread and used frequently in writing this volume. Drugs and the... [Pg.1]
