The classification is based on the degree of transformation which has taken place since the coal deposits were formed, for example lignite is a low rank coal which is described by the World Coal Institute (WCI, 2002) as coal with low organic matmity . This means that it has less carbon and more moisture than higher ranking coals such as anthracite. The latter is the densest coal, has the highest carbon content of all coals and least volatile matter. It has the highest caloric value and because it produces no smoke when bmnt it is thus favomed in meas classified as smokeless zones. [Pg.123]
