Smidt

A common property of coordinated alkenes is their susceptibility to attack by nucleophiles such as OH , OMe , MeC02, and Cl , and it has long been known that Zeise s salt is slowly attacked by non-acidic water to give MeCHO and Pt metal, while corresponding Pd complexes are even more reactive. This forms the basis of the Wacker process (developed by J. Smidt and his colleagues at Wacker Chemie, 1959-60) for converting ethene (ethylene) into ethanal (acetaldehyde) — see Panel overleaf.

Experimental results from Chen (1968), Holtz (1971), and Holtz and Singer (1968, 1969) more or less confirmed the validity of Holtz s maximum boiling suppression theory, while some other experimental studies by Deane and Rohsenow (1969), Schultheiss and Smidt (1969) and Kottowski and Grass (1970) did not confirm. This disagreement of experimental results was explained by Dwyer (1976), along with the details of all the experiments.

To validate the skin carotenoid RRS detection approach, we initially carried out an indirect validation experiment that compared HPLC derived carotenoid levels of fasting serum with RRS derived carotenoid levels for inner palm tissue sites.
