Explain that SMART goals are more likely to succeed. Start with something short-term, to get a swift impact ... 

Whatever they suggest, help them to think about the logical steps to achieve it. Where multiple steps are needed, each can be a SMART goal, but don t overload with goals, as this undermines the overall Achievability. A non-SMART goal might be, I ll sort out my debts . Don t dismiss it - just try to SMARTen it up, e.g. 

The SMART goal might be, By Friday I ll book an appointment with Citizen s Advice Bureau to discuss my debts . 

Focus on a short-term SMART goal in the one-off assessment or the start of your outpatient work with someone. You or the CC should check progress, give praise, and support someone to address obstacles. Medium and longer-term goals are also important, but need continued support, e.g. by GP, CC, carers. 

A clear research question/hypothesis Make sure you understand this if joining a team If writing your own, your supervisor should help ensure it s simple and manageable for your timeframe. Check it s a SMART goal (p72)... 

If assessment/management are the focus, explain and document a reasonable timescale (SMART goals, p72). Review this frequently handover to your successor to keep plans active. Address other reasons for appointments with your team, and consider non-medical ways to meet needs, e.g. help lonely people find a social network. If somebody needs frequent appointments, they may require a CC (if they have one, check what s happening in their contacts). 

A clear treatment plan is essential consider SMART goals (p72) rating scales to measure response to treatment (p57).

So have I made my point "Zero injuries" should not be specified as a safety goal. Instead, zero injuries should be the aim or purpose of a safety mission—a mission that depends on various safety processes motivated in part by SMART goals. 

At follow-up team meetings, SMARTS goals can be set and tasks assigned according to the action plans derived for increasing team effectiveness. Of course, an evaluation plan is needed to assess whether the intervention actually increases the success of the safety team. To the extent behaviors can be identified as barriers to team success, a practical action plan identifies dysfunctional behaviors to eliminate and fimctional behaviors to support. As such, an evaluation plan would assess whether tiie target behaviors change in the desired directions. 

Of course, we know the insinuation depicted in Figure 19.1 is preposterous. Common sense tells us, correctly this time, that fairy-tale solutions are utopian and rmrealistic. It makes much more sense to plan and work for tiie small wins that come from SMART goals (Chapter 11). We need to remember the well-known answer to the silly question, "How do you eat an elephant " One bite at a time ...
