The tubes and rods used in the laboratory are made by one of three methods. The first, and oldest, method requires a team of skilled men, known as primary glasshlowers. One member of the team uses an iron tube, approximately 5 ft long and fitted with a mouthpiece at one end and a small flange at the other end. The flanged end of this blowpipe, as it is called, is repeatedly dipped into the molten glass and turned continuously until a gob of the desired size has been formed.

Many parts are configured so that small flanges to be backgauged have noncritical dimensions, whereas the distance between the flanges is critical. For example, in the part shown in Fig. 10, AB and DC are screw-down flanges for this panel, which must fit over another panel. Dimension BC is therefore critical. If shear blank sizes are controlled very accurately, it is possible to backgauge... 

Section beam n. (1) A large, flanged roll upon which warp yarn is wound at the beam warper in preparation for slashing. (2) Small flanged or unflanged beams assembled side-by-side on the shaft of a warp beam for further processing. 

Lens Ring Normally used on small flanges. As the internal pressure increases, it acts on the inside surface of the ring, and forces it to the edge of the cone. Pressures as high as 45,000 psi have been obtained for very small sizes. Often considered one of the fastest opening closures. 

Bodies are usually in two or three pieces or ha e a rernos able retainer to facilitate installing seals. End connections are usually flanged or threaded in small sizes, although segrnented-ball s ah es are offered in wafer style also.

Example 2.5 In a small polypropylene pump the flange on the cover plate is 2 mm thick. When the rigid clamping screws are tightened, the flange is reduced in thickness by 0.03 mm. Estimate the initial stress in the plastic and the stress after 1 week... 

Again, as described earlier, we model the exhaust opening as a finite circular opening across which the fluid flows with a constant speed. The axis of the coordinate system is a streamline which we take to be R = 0 and on the surface of the flange of the Aaberg exhaust system is also a streamline on which = 0, due to the nondimensionalization given in Eq. (10,112). Further, at the outer edge of the et, which we assume to be at d> — 0—i.e., it is assumed that the jet is infinitesimally small—the boundary condition (F.q. (10.119)) is appropriate.
