Slave system

Now, I want to build much the same device - a master-slave system which operates electrically. But I want the slaves to be made especially carefully by modern large-scale machinists so that they are one-fourth the scale of the hands that you ordinarily maneuver. So you have a scheme by which you can do things at one-quarter scale anyway - the little servo motors with little hands play with little nuts and bolts they drill little holes they are four times smaller. Aha So I manufacture a quarter-size lathe I manufacture quarter-size tools and I make, at the one-quarter scale, still another set of hands again relatively one-quarter size This is one-sixteenth size, from my point of view. And after I finish doing this I wire directly from my large-scale system, through transformers perhaps, to the one-sixteenth-size servo motors. Thus I can now manipulate the one-sixteenth size hands. 

The development of commerce and merchant s capital gives rise everywhere to the tendency towards production of exchange-values, increases its vc ume, multiplies it, makes it cosmopolitan, and develops money into world-money. Commerce, therefore, has a more or less dissolving influence everywhere on the producing organisation, which it finds at hand and whose different forms are mainly carried on with a view to use-value. To what extent it brings about a dissolution of the old mode of production depends on its solidity and internal structure. And whither this process of diss(rfution will lead, In other words, what new mode of production will replace the old, does not depend on commerce, but on the character of the old mode of production itself. In the ancient world the effect of commerce and the development of merchant s capital always resulted in a slave economy depending on the point of departure, only in the transformation of a patriarchal slave system devot to the pr uclion of the immediate means of subsistence into one devoted to the production of surplus-value. However, in the modern world, it results in the capitalist mode of production. ... 

The slave system failed, however, to perfect the domination that [Judge Thomas] Ruffin envisioned. It failed to bind the slaves so tightly as to deprive them of all room to maneuver. It failed to wring from them all prohibited yearnings. Slavery was, to be sure, a horribly oppressive system that severely restricted the ambit within which its victims could make decisions. But slavery did not extinguish altogether the possibility of choice. (43)... 

Meanwhile, in the area of remote manipulation, electrohydraulic, or electromechanical, bilateral master-slave systems were developed for the nuclear power industry to reduce the mental burden placed on the operator by providing force reflection. Aircraft controls for large planes and some high-performance military aircraft, building on work from the field of teleoperation or remote manipulation, have done away with the direct physical interconnection of the pilot and flight surfaces and now use fly-by-wire systems. 

A telesurgjcal robotic system for the transurethral resection of bladder tumors has been reported previously [48]. The slave system consists of a distal dexterous manipulator that is basically a continuum robot composed of two serially-stacked multibackbone sections. The slave is equipped with a pair of biopsy forceps, a fiberscope, and a laser cautery fiber and is deployed through a standard resectoscope. Each multibackbone section is actuated by three actuators and provides 2 DOFs that, along with a translation, provide a total of 5 DOFs at the tip. The system was evaluated in an ex vivo bovine bladder. The results demonstrated that better intra-vesicular dexterity and submiUimeter accuracy could be achieved by using the system. 

Tools are mounted on a powoed robot arm equipped with fence and position control with input systems firom a mastm telemanipuladH to control the powered robot as a slave system. The use of data gloves and other tacdle/force feed in systems to the t iaatm can enhance the opoatw knowledge of what is occurring at the slave system.
