Slang, avoiding

Warning and instructional signs and instruction should be primarily provided in the national language of the country of operation. They should be concise and direct. Use of jargon, slang or local dialect references should always be avoided, as these may not always be correctly interpreted. Abbreviations should be avoided unless the abbreviation is commonly known and used by the population, versus the descriptive word or words. 

Avoid slang words and phrases unless you are deliberately trying to imitate speech. 

If this is to be avoided and several fractions are expected, it is preferable to use an apparatus which permits various receivers to be brought successively under the mouth of the delivery tube. The form shown in Fig. 16 may be used, for example. According to its shape it is known in laboratory slang as a spider , frog , pigling , or cow s udder . 

Be polite and formal. Avoid slang, cliches, contractions, and informal language. 

I Avoid slang, jargon, and acronyms unless you know the other person will understand you. 

Don t get put off by the third requirement. Scorers know you have just 25 minutes to write your essay, so they don t expect perfect grammar and punctuation (although it certainly won t hurt ). They will look for word choices that reflect a strong vocabulary (avoid cliches and slang), variety in sentence structure, and logical development of ideas. We ll go into greater detail about essay specifics in Chapter 3. 

Avoid the use of slang terminology. Use accepted industry equipment descriptions and nomenclature whenever possible, as typically described in industry publications (e.g. API RP 14C). 

One further goal of this chapter is the harmonization of general chromatographic terms between engineers and chemists, avoiding slang terms" that are quite common in the literature and daily use.

Avoid using slang and idioms. Choose words that will convey only the most specific meaning. 

Our view is that the term voltage is essentially a physics slang expression, derived from the word volts and meaning how many volts . Voltage has little conceptual status other than its association with volts . Our preference is to avoid use of the term altogether because its use cannot aid the development of understanding in electricity. However, as already indicated, this is not possible in the context of this research. 

Avoid the use of slang and fad words. Words such as O.K., terrific, and tremendous are not suitable for technical writing, which calls for a formal style. Fad words or expressions such as prioritize, finalize, and the bottom line should also he avoided.
