Size of the Work Surface

The size of the desk is determined by the horizontal distance between the user and the display this is a factor of the eye-to-monitor distance and the viewing angle. There is some controversy over the most applicable screen height and viewing angle.

These values range from 0 to 40° below the horizontal ISO 9241-5 1999 states that the viewing angle shonld not exceed 40°. To allow for this range it is imperative for the monitor to be adjustable. ISO 9241-5 1999 states that users should be able to angle, tilt, or swivel the display, and height adjustment is also preferred.

The size of the work surface is dependent on the task(s), documents, and technology. The primary working surface (e.g., supporting the keyboard, display, and documents) should be sufficient to (1) permit the screen to be moved forward or backward to a comfortable viewing distance for a range... 

The capacity of these machines is identified hy the size of the working surfaces of the table, the length of travel of the longitudinal, transverse and vertical movements, and the maximum distance from spindle to table surface on the horizontal model or from spindle to column on the vertical model.
