Sites of Special Scientific Interest

Certain places in the ice-free valleys have been designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), in order to protect ongoing scientific research or to preserve them in pristine condition for possible future study. This action was taken by the seventh Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM VII) in 1972 and is contained in Recommendation VII-3 (Stonehouse 2002, p. 369). The SSSI sites in the ice-free valleys are Barwick Valley (Fig. 3.6), the area between the Canada Glacier and Lake Fryxell (Taylor Valley), and the Linnaeus Terrace... [Pg.71]

Sensitive Ecology (habitats and species ) - are present and defined within 20km of the site, with many present within 10km or less these include European designated sites (including Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), Special Protection Area (SPA), wetland of international importance ( Ramsar site ), and UK designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSl)). [Pg.459]

The Ag (100) surface is of special scientific interest, since it reveals an order-disorder phase transition which is predicted to be second order, similar to tire two dimensional Ising model in magnetism [37]. In fact, tire steep intensity increase observed for potentials positive to - 0.76 V against Ag/AgCl for tire (1,0) reflection, which is forbidden by symmetry for tire clean Ag(lOO) surface, can be associated witli tire development of an ordered (V2 x V2)R45°-Br lattice, where tire bromine is located in tire fourfold hollow sites of tire underlying fee (100) surface tills stmcture is depicted in tlie lower right inset in figure C2.10.1 [15]. [Pg.2750]

Interest in soil decontamination by electrokinetic processing has been increasing steadily, as shown by the volume of scientific studies. There have been two workshop/conferences dedicated to this topic in the U.S. in recent years [86,87] and a number of companies now have offered specialized services in this area. The technology is an emerging one and it is not yet fully mature. There exists a need to conduct further basic and applied studies before it achieves its full potential. In environmental remediation, the site chemistry before and after any application of technical processes need to be fully evaluated. It is recommended that bench scale, laboratory tests be undertaken prior to any site work to help optimize the process parameters. Although the... [Pg.648]
