Single-layer systems

The design of cover systems is site-specific and depends on the intended function of the final cover—components can range from a single-layer system to a complex multilayer system. To minimize percolation, conventional cover systems use low-permeability barrier layers. These barrier layers are often constructed of compacted clay, geomembranes, geosynthetic clay liners, or combinations of these materials.

With respect to single layer systems (conventional, ImRe, Promote and dry developable resists), we expect that computer programs that can simulate latent image formation and development processes will become of great importance in the near future. A better understanding of the mechanism which underlies the dissolution or etching of resist layers in a developer or plasma respectively is also crucial in order to achieve the ultimate resolution of single layer photoresists. In this respect, well chosen and perfectly defined polymers are required. 

Although multilevel schemes are more complex than single layer systems, the former will probably grow in importance because high resolution capability can be reached in a very straightforward way. These systems often require tailor-made polymers and photosensitive materials, thus giving rise to a lot of research in this field.
