Amorphous silica, ie, silicon dioxide [7631-86-9] Si02, does not have a crystalline stmcture as defined by x-ray diffraction measurements. Amorphous silica, which can be naturally occurring or synthetic, can be either surface-hydrated or anhydrous. Synthetic amorphous silica can be broadly divided into two categories of stable materials (1) vitreous silica or glass (qv), which is made by fusing quart2 at temperatures greater than approximately 1700°C (see Silica, vitreous silica), and microamorphous silica, which is discussed herein. 

The density of vitreous silica is lower than those of the low pressure crystalline phases of silicon dioxide (121), especially that of quartz.

Compared with vitreous quartz, porosity and strain in films cause the 1085 cm 1 and 460 cm 1 absorption bands to be broadened and shifted to lower wave numbers, whereas the 800 cm 1 band is shifted to higher wave numbers. As can be seen in Fig. 4, after proper densification (i.e. heat treatment between 800 and 1000°C), a pure SiC>2 film deposited with no oxygen deficiency by low-temperature CVD becomes essentially indistinguishable from high-temperature thermally grown silicon dioxide... 

The primary use of silicon dioxide is in the building industry. It is used to make ceramics, enamels, concrete, and specialized silica bricks used as refractory materials. It is also one of the raw materials from which all kinds of glass are made. Vitreous silicon dioxide is an important constituent of specialized types of glass, such as that used in making laboratory equipment, mirrors, windows, prisms, cells, and other kinds of optical devices.
