Silicon-containing carbon clusters

The chemistry of mixed carbon- and silicon-containing cluster ions has been studied by several groups128-133 141. Parent reported the rate constants for the reactions of SiC + (.n = 2-8) and Si2C + (n 6) with acetylene130. In this study an interesting exchange of carbon atoms upon reaction of 13C-labeled Si213C + clusters was observed (equation 24). 

Clusters of the elements aluminum to thallium containing only one or two carbon atoms and strong direct element-element interactions, similar to boron rich car-baboranes, have not yet been synthesized, and also the corresponding silicon derivatives are relatively rare. To the best of our knowledge only one aluminum-silicon and one gallium-silicon cluster (1 and 2) has been reported in the literature. Because of the association of polymeric phase with metal containing phase the walls of nanoreactor participate in redox process with cover formation for metal containing clusters obtained [3-6], Metal/carbon nanocomposites will be more active than earbon or silicon nanostructures because their masses are bigger at identieal sizes and shapes. Therefore the vibration energy transmitted to the medium is also high. 

For systems containing hundreds of electrons (e.g., the electron gas, metallic lithium, clusters of carbon atoms, crystals of N2, large molecules Si ,H , and solid silicon), quantum Monte Carlo methods provide the most accurate solutions available. When the stable, lowest energy structure of C20 is desired, a quantum Monte Carlo method gives the most reliable result.
