The n transition energy of a spiropyran zwitterion of the type described in Section 4.4.2 [(27a) (27b)] has been used by de Mayo et al. to characterize the polarity of solid oxide surfaces such as that of silica gel [217]. [Pg.429]

The amorphous silicas, transitional aluminas, and variety of carbons (graphitic, black, activated) employed as well as the experimental protocols for PZC measurement, metal uptake, and catalyst characterization have been described in previous publications [5-10]. The dynamics of fast processes such as electron and energy transfers and vibrational and electronic deexcitations can be probed by using short-pulsed lasers. The experimental developments that have made possible the direct probing of molecular dissociation steps and other ultrafast processes in real time (in the femtosecond time range) have, in a few cases, been extended to the study of surface phenomena. For instance, two-photon photoemission has been used to study the dynamics of electrons at interfaces [ ]. Vibrational relaxation times have also been measured for a number of modes such as the 0-Fl stretching m silica and the C-0 stretching in carbon monoxide adsorbed on transition metals [ ]. Influence on the phase behaviour is observed if even small amounts (0.5 wt %) of hairy silica-like nanoparticles obtained by block-copolymer-directed sol-gel synthesis are added to a block copolymer [53,214]. On the example of a PS-fo-PI diblock copolymer a depression of the ODT of approx. 20 K was observed (Fig. 68), accompanied by a broadening of the transition. The largest depression was observed for rod-like nanoparticles, which is explained by the energy introduced by the defects [215]. [Pg.217]

In the Si(OX)3 cluster, which simulates a surface E -center in bulk silica, two lowest in energy electronic transitions occur from MOs combined of oxygen lone pairs to the singly occupied sp3-hybrid-type orbital of Si. In this case, the TD-B3LYP result (4.66 eV) underestimates the experimental value by 1.5eV, while the OVGF excitation energy (6.36 eV) is close to the MRDCI value (6.21 eV) and experimental data (6.2 eV). [Pg.80]
