Silica surface properties

Silica surface properties are a function of its state of hydrolysis. The rate of the hydrolysis depends on pH, ionic strength, and previous treatment history of the sample. Surfactants and polymers can adsorb on silica through different mechanisms such as electrostatical... [Pg.533]

The mesoporous ordered silicas of different type represent the new generation of materials with unique properties. The discovery of these materials became basis for creation of new catalysts, adsorbents, sensors and supporter for other molecules. The most important way of the modifying physical and chemical properties of mesopurous silicas consist in organic components incorporation on the silica surface as part of the silicate walls or their insertion within channels of the mesopores. This ensured that interest in synthesis and study of functionalized mesoporous materials shai ply grew. In spite of it, these materials are studied insufficiently. [Pg.41]

Unloaded silica does not recover HPA from aqueous solution. The surface of silica gel modified with quarternary ammonium salts (QAS) gets anion-exchange properties. The aim of the work is the elaboration of solid-phase reagents on the base of ion associate of HPA with QAS immobilized onto silica surface for the determination of phosphoms and organic reductants. Heterocyclic (safranine and lucigenine) and aliphatic (trinonyloctadecyl ammonium iodide and tetradecyl ammonium nitrate) compounds have been examined as QAS. [Pg.60]

An understanding of the surface chemistry of silica is required to interpret its chromatographic properties. The silica surface consists of a network of silanol groups, some of which may. be hydrogen bonded to water, and siloxane groups, as shown in Figure 4.2. A fully hydroxylat silica surface contains about 8... [Pg.165]

The pH optical fiber sensor without any pH-sensitive dye was also described70. Porous silica layer made by the sol-gel method was cladded onto optical fibre core and was exploited as the optical transducer. Acid-base properties of silica surface caused that the surface charge of silica changed with pH of the solution. For example saturation of the sol-gel layer with cations leads to an increase of the electron density of the film, hence, the refractive index of the film. Since the surface charge of silica depends on pH, the refractive index of silica film varies also with pH. Thus, changes of... [Pg.368]

The very high surface areas of OMS materials and various possibilities to modifying their surface properties make these silicas promising for catalytic applications. In the following sections, a short survey will be given of different methods to modify the properties of the silica materials and of catalysis with OMS-based catalysts. [Pg.122]
