Significant Scientific Agreement Built from Accomplishment Within the Research Pyramid... 

Significant scientific agreement (SSA) is the FDA term that lays out requirements for manufacturers seeking a health claim for a product. It s a comprehensive process that entails all those years of research within the health claims research pyramid (Part I) and qualifies only the most developed new health products for clinical trials, which, if successful, allow eventual health statements on consumer products. 

This chapter focuses on the 12 most toxic POPs subject to control of the Stockholm Convention. It is recognized that there are other POPs which have been demonstrated to elicit adverse effects of toxicological significance on human health and the environment, for which international agreement has yet to be reached on their inclusion in the Convention list. Indeed, five new POPs candidates (hexabromobiphenyl (6-PBB), pent-abromodiphenyl ether (PBDE), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), chlordecone and lindane) were proposed and considered at the First Meeting of the POPs Review Committee of the Stockholm Convention in November 2005 (UNEP, 2005). The definition of the term nanoparticles varies significantly depending on the scientific community where it is used. While in material sciences, the prefix nano is generally restricted to structures smaller than 10 nm or, at the most, 100 nm, the same term in pharmaceutical sciences may refer to particles with up to 1000 nm in diameter. However, when dealing with nanoparticles, there is general agreement on the phase state of the particles themselves which are supposed to be solid and dispersed in a continuous solid or fluid medium. In the following, we stick to a nomenclature that is common in pharmaceutical applications and has been proposed by Kreuter spherical nanoparticles with a compact solid structure are referred to as nanospheres, while hollow nanoparticles with a fluid content are named nanocapsules.
