Signal detection and analysis

In fuel-lean premixed burners, the primary air ratio determines the quality of combustion changing the rotational speed of the flue gas fan has also some influence. An ionization probe is used to determine the quality of combustion. A dedicated system, developed at GWI, provides accurate detection and analysis of the ionization signal. This includes a metering device, which is provided with a rectangular supply voltage, thus warranting very accurate ionization signals. 

Electrical methods involve the detection and analysis of electronic pulses generated by droplets in a measurement volume or on a wire. The electronic signals are then converted into digital data and calibrated to produce information on droplet size distribution. Lee and coworkers (2006) presented a compact cell counting/sorting system with several essential components including a micromachined flow cytometer chip device, an optical detection system, and a data analysis and control system to achieve the functions of cell sample injection, optical signal detection, and cell collection. Its dimensions were 37 cm in length, 16 cm in width, and 18 cm in height (Fig. 8c) [16]. 

Detection and analysis of DNA and RNA present particular problems for the analytical biochemist because of the very low concentration of analyte. Often only one or two copies of a given sequence are present in the sample. Without either target or signal amplification, detection of such rare sequences is not feasible.
