Siding composition

Figure 4.1 also shows the formation of concentration polarization gradients on both sides of the membrane. However, in most membrane processes there is a bulk flow of liquid or gas through the membrane, and the permeate-side composition... [Pg.161]

Thus far, only binary mixtures have been separated in the total membrane column. Results of this work have been discussed elsewhere (28,29). A sample shell-side composition profile from a total column experiment with a CO2-O2 mixture is shown in Figure 2. Table I summarizes the total column data obtained to date. [Pg.260]

Usually in an enricher or the enriching section of the membrane column, the more permeable component is steadily concentrated from the feed inlet to the compressor. However, some of the results show that the shell-side and even the tube-side composition profiles can pass through a minimum. Note the experimental data in Figures 7 and 8. In these cases the feed flow is relatively slow and reflux action, rather than bulk flow, is predominant. Figure 8 Illustrates that a composition minimum can also occur dinring operation of the total column when the residue flow rate from the enriching section is too slow. [Pg.267]

Membrane separation quality can be described in terms of a separation factor as defined in Eq. [2.9] with x,- and y,- representing the bulk feed-side and bulk permeate-side compositions, respectively, of two compounds being separated. However, this separation factor includes the driving forces for the two compounds and so is not an accurate reflection of the selectivity of the membrane alone. A better representation of membrane selectivity is to calculate the resistances for two compounds according to Eq. [2.10] and then calculate selectivity as the ratio of the inverse resistances. If the membrane resistance is dominant for both compounds, then the calculated selectivity would be the membrane selectivity, sometimes referred to as the permselectivity, a, defined as ... [Pg.51]

New set of data will be provided on the characterisation of these polymers by RP-HPLC approach developed in our laboratory. Data presented on polymers demonstrate that the side composition of these compounds could markedly influence their membrane activity by altering the relative hydrophobicity and the charge properties of the polymer. [Pg.105]
